In order to utilize the UnaPDA application, a number of steps must be taken to prepare the system for use. This help page will address a number of installation and configuration tasks that may be commonly preformed, including:
Configuring the 'unapda.exe' link (Administrators must perform this step)
Configuring User specific preferences (User Profile)
Version Compatibility (between PDA and Server)
Prior to installing the UnaPDA application, there are a number of items that must be in place / available.
Unanet for PDA License -- You must have purchased the separate license in order for this feature to be available. This license information needs to be included in your license. properties file -- which is maintained by the Unanet System Administrator.
PDA User role -- Only user's with the PDA User role will have access to the PDA Settings screen or be able to HotSync data with the Unanet Server application.
HotSync Manager software -- This software must be secured separately for the client machine to facilitate the syncing of data between the PDA and the Unanet Server application. This software typically is provided with the PDA device.
PDA device -- The PDA device must be purchased separately. This version of the application requires a Palm™ device running OS 3.25 or higher w/ 200K available RAM The amount of RAM will vary depending on amount of profile data you are transferring to the PDA (this depends on the number of projects/tasks each user is assigned to, and the number to time periods they choose to have available on the PDA).
In order to install the Unanet for PDA application, you will need to use the HotSync software and docking/cable hardware that were provided with the PDA device. The following instructions assume you have previously performed a successful HotSync operation and understand this process. If this is not the case, please refer to the instructions provided with your PDA device for additional information.
Before end users can begin to download and install the conduit and PDA application (from the link on their PDA Settings profile page), the Unanet System Administrator will need to configure the following property: unanet.pda.download_link. This property will identify the location that the Administrator has placed the unapda.exe file for subsequent downloads by end users.
By default, this file will be located in the c:\unanet\pda directory after installing the Unanet application. The property will need to be added to the unanet.properties file to reflect the location the file is finally placed. The administrator may also need to take steps to make this directory visible to the user community.
Installation of the conduit and PDA application requires several steps as outlined below:
Download the the unapda.exe file from your server and save it to a location of your choice on your local desktop machine. This file contains both the conduit software application and the unanet.prc PDA application. This file can be accessed via a download link on your PDA Settings page on each user's profile (which is only available for users with the 'PDA User' role).
Run the unapda.exe file on your desktop machine, following the on screen installation instructions.
During this process, the unanet.prc file is copied to the 'program files\unanet' directory on your desktop machine and the conduit is instructed to load the unanet.prc application onto the PDA device during the next HotSync.
Once the conduit portion of the installation is complete, you will need to execute the HotSync process in order to have the unanet.prc application installed on the PDA device. With the PDA device attached to your desktop (either via a cable or cradle hardware), initiate the HotSync.
Once the Unanet application has been installed on the PDA, you will need to perform an initial application configuration. If any errors occur, check the 'log' file for details.
The first time you execute the Unanet application on the PDA, you will be presented with a screen that resembles:
Clicking on the 'menu' button (
)
on the PDA will reveal the drop
down menu with the following choices:
About Unanet -- This option displays version information.
Program Setup -- This option displays the configuration screen for username, password and URL information.
Click on the Program Setup drop down menu option to perform the initial configuration, this screen will resemble the following:
UserName - Enter your Unanet username (this is the exact / same username you use to access the web based Unanet).
Enter Password - Click on the <Password Set> button. This will present an edit screen for you to enter your Unanet password. Click OK when password has been entered to save the password (this is the exact / same password you use to access the web based Unanet). If you change your password via the web based Unanet, you will need to come back and update this password as well.
Server Address - Enter the full URL for your Unanet servlet (including the http://) -- (the same one you use when accessing the web-based Unanet application. (For example: http://your.domain.com/servlet/unanet)
Discard data on next Hotsync - This check box is optional and can be used to essentially ignore the contents of the data on the PDA during the next HotSync. Basically, no data will be copied from the PDA to the server during the sync, so you will end up with a sync that only involves copying data from the server to the PDA. You can think of this as resetting the PDA with the current server data.
Once you have populated this screen, you can perform another HotSync. This time, your PDA application will be populated with appropriate profile data as well as live timesheet and/or expense report data. Your Unanet for the PDA should be ready for use!
To check the status of your HotSync operation, you can check out the Log files. These may be accessible via either the PDA device and/or via the conduit software.
Before doing any uninstallation, it is highly recommended that you first HotSync your UnaTime and/or Una$ense data as the data on the PDA will be discarded during this process.
To uninstall the Unanet application from the PDA, perform the following steps:
On the windows platform, this involves:
This will uninstall the Unanet Conduit application from your client desktop machine.
The process for upgrading the PDA or conduit application is simply performing the uninstallation steps followed by the installation procedures.
Before doing any upgrade, it is highly recommended that you first HotSync your UnaTime and/or Una$ense data as the data on the PDA will be discarded during the upgrade process.
HotSync the your data with the server as to not lose any work in progress.
Download the new Unanet for PDA unapda.exe file from your PDA Setting page
Each PDA user has the capability to configure several settings that will influence their PDA usage. These settings can be maintained by accessing the server application, and navigating to User -- Profile, and selecting the PDA Settings option from the More Functions menu.
In order for a particular Unanet user to have access to the PDA Settings page and associated Unanet for the PDA functionality, the Administrator must first set up the user with the "PDA User" role on the Admin -- People screen.
It is critical that the version of Unanet for the PDA be in sync with the Server side Unanet application. To this end, a compatibility check is performed during the HotSync operation. If there is a version mis-match, this will be reported via the conduit software.
You can check the version of the PDA by launching the Unanet application on the PDA, and from the main menu screen clicking on the PDA 'menu' option -- and selecting the 'About Unanet' option.
