The Correlation Between Snickers and Team Productivity

As I was cleaning out my reading files, I came across an article from CIO magazine. It was on 11 ways to Improve Your IT Team’s Productivity. Maybe because I was crunching on an apple, the idea in the first sentence caught my eye -- provide your team with free food for greater productivity. Everyone wants high-performing teams, and, if all it took was a candy bar, I was ready to go for it!

Of course, making snacks easily available was only one of the tips provided. While reading the rest of the article, it occurred to me that a strong communications platform was an idea supported by several of the people providing the tips. I agree! A robust communication platform can and will improve productivity if it:

  • Is easy to use
  • Provides relevant and timely information
  • Promotes team collaboration
  • Encourages independent analysis

Here are some thoughts to consider as you set up a communication platform. For more ideas, see the link below to receive a copy of our Project/Portfolio Management Capability Checklist.

Static versus dynamic data
To dramatically improve productivity, get up-to-the minute information quickly and easily to the people that can and will take action.
Person-specific information delivery
Not everyone needs to have the same information or the same level of information at the same time.  Exception reporting and project alerts need to be focused, delivered quickly and tracked to resolution.
Timely data capture and systems integration
When real-time data entry is part of the project and communications platform, there must be controls to monitor and validate the data entered with workflow to support appropriate review and approval.
Systems integration
Automating and timing the exchange of data between systems adds to the viability of project status reports.
Project specific data fields and configurable business rules provide flexibility to communicate the right information to each of the project stakeholders.
Providing space to capture notes and ad hoc action items increases the value as a communication and data repository tool.
24/7 Data Access
Ability to review, edit, approve and share project information anytime, anywhere and from any device ensures efficient communication.
